33 Jack and Jill

It didn’t take long for Jack and Jill to arrive at their destination, still holding hands as tightly as when they left Path 2. It was as if someone had shot them through some sort of cannon, only they were standing the whole time and Jack didn’t get motion sick. Their final destination was a media room, like something you would find in someone’s home. There were three rows of seating with four overstuffed chairs in each row. The walls were draped in red silk, and there was a heavy, red velvet curtain pulled back with golden tassels on each side framing a huge screen.

“Where would you like to sit?” asked Jack, motioning to the chairs with his free hand.

“Right in the middle,” Jill responded, pointing to two center chairs.

“The middle it is,” said Jack, leading the way.

They finally let go of one another when they took their seats.

“Are you nervous?” Jill asked.

“Well, yes, honestly. Knowing that I was so horrible to you is bad enough. I think actually seeing it will probably be even worse. Jill, I’m s…” Jack was interrupted by the movie reel that started up all by itself. The recessed lighting faded to black as the two of them fixed their attention on the screen in front of them.

The movie opened with a shot of a young Jack asleep in his bed. His alarm began to buzz, so Jacky rolled over, turned the alarm off, and rolled back over to continue his slumber. Shortly thereafter, a lady came into his room. It was his mom. Wow – Jack had forgotten how beautiful she was when he was younger. She was dressed in her usual work clothes – a skirt, a button-up blouse, and sensible shoes.

“Jacky, get up!” she barked as she grabbed hold of his shoulder and shook him a bit. “Get up! It’s already 7 o’clock, Jacky. If you don’t get up soon, you’ll be late for school. Your breakfast is ready, so get up and wash your face. Let’s go!” she said as she exited the room. Shortly thereafter, young Jack could hear the voices of his parents

Suddenly, the scene changed to Jack’s mom and dad in the kitchen. Jack’s mom was busy getting everything ready for the day. A sack lunch was on the counter, and Jack’s mom was washing dishes in the sink.

“What the hell’s your problem, Mary?” Jack’s dad was sitting at the kitchen table, a half empty bottle of Jim Beam and a shot glass were in front of him.

“Nothing, David. I‘m just trying to get everything done and get to work,” Jack’s mom responded to the tank-top clad man.

“Oh, so what you’re doing is more important than making my breakfast, huh?” It was apparent that Jack’s dad was angry by the tone of his voice.

“No, David, of course not. It’s just that...” Mary began.

“It’s just that you’re a crappy wife and a horrible mother, so you can’t make my breakfast.
